Alphabets & Numbers

Knowing the alphabet and understanding numbers are essential skills.  A lovely, simple way to help your child to learn their letters and numbers is to put some helpful posters on the wall.

The posters above were carefully designed after years of working with children in many schools teaching literacy and learning alongside their brilliant teachers! So each item that was chosen to illustrate the letters was a very deliberate selection. For instance you will see that I show the ‘short’ vowel sounds: ‘i’ as in ‘insect’, ‘a’ as in ‘apple’ etc. because phonetic teaching methods seem to be the most successful when it comes to helping our children to learn to read. It’s the same with the consonants: ‘d’ for ‘duck’ helps to show the short ‘d’ sound (unlike ‘d’ for ‘deer’).  (Sorry I love the ‘x’ for ‘xylophone’ I hope you will forgive me a little artistic licence). Likewise the numbers poster includes the words for each number. This is very important as it links reading in with numeracy and reinforces the learning experience. “Posters in pride of place. He [My son] is delighted that there is a t-for-train AND a t-for-tractor, as they are the two best things in the world. He loves them. Thank you very much again!” Emily Cooper, London

“Hi Catherine, I received your beautiful posters today. I just wanted to say thank you very much,  they are just what we wanted for our nursery, for our baby due at the end of the month. I’m looking forward to putting them up at the weekend…the posters are beautiful and they [other people] shouldn’t hesitate to buy. Many thanks.” Cherie

“Dear Catherine, Thank you for the really quick delivery and secure packaging, the posters arrived in perfect condition. They are really lovely, exactly what I was looking for to brighten up my grandson’s bedroom at Nana & Grandad’s house.” G McCormack

“My daughter uses these posters for reference when she is unsure of the letter formation or sound. The pictures are phonetically correct and help greatly. She has become much more confident in writing her numbers the correct way round, copying from the poster. I love the fact the colours are not too bright and garish, they are subtle and blend into our living room. The letters are formed in the correct way. It is difficult to find examples of ‘f’ and ‘k’ [as in the lower case poster]! A great investment on my part as I’m sure she will use them even more when she starts school after the summer! Thank you!” Kirstine Henderson

“Hi Catherine, many thanks for the copies of your poster, my 16 month old claimed them for her own when she saw there was a dog illustration.” Gareth of Essex Tubes

“Thanks for sending me the video link, it is fab! Me and my daughter will be singing along when we receive the posters :)” K M of Doncaster

We have now recived your alphabet posters brought for my 3 year old daughter, we have put one in her bedroom and one in our kitchen…I chose your posters as the illustrations where clear as well as being able to see the each letter and also the picture chosen for each letter for example for the letter G you have gate, goat rather than so many other alphabet charts ive looked that have chosen giraffe which can confuse a child…
look forward to teaching my daughter the alphabet.

Thank you Carla – definitely I chose the pictures to show the sounds of the letters that teachers use in the phonetic teaching methods – so I really appreciate your comment – makes it all worth while!

Hope the alphabets help your daughter and bring you a lot of fun.
