Dog portraits step-by-step

Golden labrador drawing dog portraits by Catherine Pain

Golden labrador – the drawing

The first step is a drawing – which is then sent to you for approval.

This is usually made from a photograph that you send to me at info@catherinepain.co.uk I then send you the drawing and you decide if you are happy with how it is progressing. This is a special service I provide to ensure that you get just what you want. At this early stage we can re-arrange and adjust the portrait.

Painting in the eyes

The next step is where the eyes are painted.

Once the eyes are complete the dog really comes to life.

Adding in darker colours

Every painting is different of course but here I have started with painting in the darker areas. I am using big ‘blocks’ of colour.

More broad layers and washes of colour one on top of another…

More areas of colour blocked in and the eyes and nose details added in…it is really beginning to come together.
