Jean Pain and Conversation Analysis

My work with Dr Jean Pain has highlighted the importance of focussing upon the structure and content of the language that clients use. Her PhD thesis is based on the work of Harvey Sacks.

Dr. Pain is teaching a small number of students (of which I am one) how her findings can be applied to the therapeutic dialogue as well as everyday conversation.

The purpose of talk is often overlooked as is the power of the words used underestimated.

I am employing her methodology in my therapy sessions in order to help assist clients in actualising their goals, specifically through bringing to their attention the words they are choosing, their content and structure and why they are so doing. To put it as simply as possible, we create who we are as we go along through our contribution to the dialogue. In therapy we can begin to heighten awareness of the choices we are unconsciously making and this then allows us options of response we were not aware of.
