A view on tackling phobias Phobias are symbols for greater, underlying fears. Some common symbols are: birds moths flying enclosed spaces open spaces fear of vomiting fear of flying Since phobias represent something else, it is important (for long-term healing) to attempt to uncover that something. The whole procedure is a delicate matter and nearly always involves a delve into the past. This may sound scary, but it?s no more scary than the phobia itself (and its often a lot less scary, since you undertake the exploration under your control). Once the perceived causal event has been discovered, and/or once some of the emotion has been released, much of the fear dissipates. So many people suffer with irrational fears; knowing in their conscious minds it?s illogical to be afraid of, say, a pigeon, which is a harmless animal. Many people chide themselves and feel embarrassed, saying they?re being silly.. For whatever reason, this symbol represents a greater, underlying fear, which is by no means silly. One effective way to deal with this is to tackle the issue at the emotional, unconscious level alongside your strong, conscious rational level. Of course you can deal with your phobia, you have a capable adult side (the side reading this, now) and its that strong, realistic side of yourself which you can employ to deal with your difficulties, through taking active steps to sort out various psychological issues in the first place. Phobias are no longer required when youve worked through therapy to bring about the integration of the various aspects of yourself. Through therapy you can begin to use your determined, strong and rational, more adult part to explore and accept your emotional, child-like side. |
